Document Summary

While some consensus may form around definitions of deviance, it is often just in the eye of the beholder. Deviance is usually culturally, socially, etc. situated. Some things are criminal or deviant in one culture may not be in another. Statistical - common conditions that are normal and the uncommon things that are deviant (i. e. engaging in crime is deviant) what ever is outside of the norm. It"s whatever people think it is therefore you will always have deviance. Absolutist - there is an absolute moral order. Some things are always right and some things are always wrong (i. e. religion it is not changeable) Normative - consensus of what is right and wrong but there is also plurality (i. e. 90% agree, 10% do not) these can change over time. Prescientific approaches includes parables and myths, supernatural or demonic deviance (i. e. witchcraft, or magic that was practiced and people were prosecuted for this because it was said to be deviant)
