Document Summary
The structure of society and a person"s place in it influence his or her religious beliefs and practices. The breadth of religious authority, not religion itself, has declined in comparison to education. Collective conscience: the common sentiments and values and that people share as a result of living together. Rituals: set practices designed to connect people to the sacred. Social cohesion - shared moral community, rules, solidarity, collective values. Provision of meaning and purpose - comfort, belonging, and major transitions. Religion often incites social conflict and reinforces social inequality. Routinization of charisma: the transformation of the unique gift of divine enlightenment into a permanent feature of everyday life, which involves turning religious inspiration into a stable social institution with defined roles. Religion is the opium for the masses. Religion subordinates women (e. g. catholic priests must be men) Church: a bureaucratic religious organization that accommodated itself to mainstream society and culture. False consciousness - hierarchy given religious justification.
