Race: a social construct used to distinguish people in terms of one or more physical markers, usually with profound effects on their lives. Ethnicity: perceived cultural markers that are deemed socially significant. Ethnic groups differ in terms of language, religion, customs, values, ancestors, etc. Prejudice: an attitude that judges a person on his or her group"s real or imagined characteristics. Discrimination: unfair treatment of people because of their group membership. A high level of genetic mixing is taking place among people throughout the world. Usually people who report multiple racial identities have parents of different racial origins. Racial intermarriage has been increasing in canada since 1871. Some respected scholars believe all belong to one human race which originated in africa. Particularly in modern times, humanity has experienced so much intermixing that race as a biological category has lost nearly all meaning. Race matters because it allows social inequality to be created and maintained.
