Deviance: occurs when someone departs from a norm and evokes a negative reaction from others. Norm-breaking is a deviance and results in a negative reaction from others. The negative reaction may be stronger than if you had broken a different norm. When the norm that has been broken is a law. Deviance may be defined differently culture to culture. Something that seems criminal today, may not have seemed criminal 100 years ago. Deviance and crime are not characteristics of individuals or actions.
