SOC342H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Iceberg
Document Summary
Scandals require society we define a scandal it is up to us. The me too movement and it"s coinciding with the weinstein accusations. To make a scandal: aggregation, consensus, a legitimating voice or voices in this case, famous white women. In less than a month, a ton of women came out to say their piece against weinstein. With cosby, it was over a significantly longer time, and the women were no where near as famous as the ones who came out for weinstein. A scandal is always real the problem was always there, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Ignores the fact that sometimes we overlook the iceberg: rarely do we notice that iceberg. True underlying bad behaviour and the scandal merely brings it to light. Performative discourse uttered by moral entrepreneurs: a scandal only becomes a scandal if we call it out as one. We call things out because we are outraged by them.
