Psychological issues can lead to physiological damage: salient example: ulcers (can be caused indirectly by stress) Stress and illness: hand selye developed a concept of stress as the non-specific response of the body to demands to adjust to wide range of changes. Nothing , everything tend to change and everything is variable. Stressors are the environmental events that cause an organism to adjust and display non-specific response. Selye outlined series of biological response called the general adaptation syndrome that occur as the body deals with the stressors. He described the stress response in three segment : Acculturative stress (the stress of adapting to a new culture) Richard lazarus and susan folkman believe that the way we deal with potential stressors begin with our appraisal of the events. So when faced with the potential disaster our first task is primary appraisal where we can determine the event is stressful.
