Distinguished 4 major categories of words: personality traits (eg. sociable, aggressive, temporary states (eg. afraid, elated, highly evaluative judgements (eg. excellent, physical characteristics (eg. tall) Some researchers have used people"s perceptions of relatedness to create taxonomies of personality traits. More often researchers have used correlation coefficients as a measure of relatedness. Two approaches produce similar results (reisenzein & schimmack, Factor analysis is a complex mathematical procedure to group variables. Moderate to strongly correlated variables are grouped together (sign does not matter) Weakly or uncorrelated variables are kept separate. Example: factor 1: + curious, + creative, factor 2: + talkative, + energetic. + over talkative, + over energetic, - over shy. The meaning of the labels may be misleading. Correlation between a factor and an observed trait (eg. artistic)
