Change from moment to moment, influenced by wants/desires, hormones, environment, how much have attended to. Can be to attain a goal or to avoid a result, reflect biological/psychological needs. Biological needs: hunger, thirst, sex, sleep, excretory, temperature, Maslow"s hierarchy of needs: physiological, safety, belongingness/love, esteem (respect from peers, self-actualization (creativity, serving others) Hypothalamus receives info about nutrient levels in body. Lateral area: stimulation induces eating, lesions lead to starvation. Ventromedial region: lesions induce overeating, stimulation stops eating. Generally eat less with others, disinhibition->what the hell effect. Sexual motivation organizational effects: exposure to androgens before birth alters neural circuits in brain, spinal cord. Without androgens, nature"s impulse is to create a female activational effects: alteration of adult levels of hormones can alter intensity of behaviour modulated by that hormone. Too much androgens can lead to ambiguous genetalia. Male peacocks have bright feathers to attract mates.
