Motivational theories and concepts: motivation involves goal-directed behavior (needs, wants, interests, desires) Incentive is an external goal that has the capacity to motivate behavior (ex. ice cream, approval from friends, promotion, etc. : emphasize how external stimuli pull people in a certain direction. Evolutionary theories: natural selection favors behaviors that maximize reproductive success, explain motives such as affiliation, aggression, sex drive, etc. in terms of their adaptive value. Premise of motives can be understood in terms of the adaptive problems they solved for our hunter-gatherer ancestors. The range and diversity of human motives: humans display an enormous diversity of motives, most theories (except evolutionary) distinguish between, biological motives originate in bodily needs, social motives originate in social experiences. People all share the same biological motives but their social motives may vary, depending on their experiences. Hormonal regulation: variety of hormone circulating in the bloodstream also contribute to the regulation of hunger, insulin a hormone secreted by the pancreas.
