Chapter 8: language and thought: cognition refers to the mental processes involved in acquiring knowledge. Morphemes are the smallest units of meaning in a language: contribute to the meaning of the entire word. Semantics is the area of language concerted with understanding the meaning of words and word combinations: consists of bother denotation (dictionary definition) and connotation (emotional overtones and secondary implications) Syntax is a system of rules that specify how words can be arrange into sentences: ex. a sentence must have both a subject and a verb. Milestone in language development: the developmental sequence of how children learn language. Motor achievement in which the babbling reflects the brain maturation in controlling motor operations to eventually produce speech. It is a key linguistic achievement, a mechanism that affords the infant the opportunity to discover and produce the patterned structure of natural language.
