Law of nature applies to the state of nature (known by reason)- natural laws don"t require a civil society, moral laws. Maker argument- god made us and everything on earth. Equal case for self preservation- equal to everything. No on can harm anyone in life, health, liberty, or possessions- unless it be to do justice. The laws of nature give rights to people (life, liberty) Rights are pointless if they cannot be enforced. Thus, people have the right to punish and restrain o enders. The rights to punish must be the same for everyone- punishment should be harsh enough to stop future crimes. The right to punish is limited by the goals of punishment- restraint, reparation. A settled design on another life- state of war.
