Document Summary

The essay is on the origins of inequality. Hobbes and others: project the passions of a social being into the state of nature. The movement of the state of nature to society seems to be a movement (ultimately) to a signi cantly worse situation. Well provided (good resources, can copy other animals) A robust and almost unalterable constitution (needs to defend themselves naked and unarmed ) The full version has even further advantages: better senses, healthier. Social and moral nature in the state of nature. Nature has contributed little to make them sociable . No need for the assistance of others. Happy in their condition(society creates many passions) Have no morals relations or determinate obligations with one another . On one hand: desire for self-preservation and yet undeveloped amour-propre. On the other hands: natural compassion- observed in parents and even in animals- not weakened by a re ective amour- proper and the subtlety of philosophers.
