POL355Y5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Excommunication, Voluntary Association, Hutterite
Document Summary
Three traditional liberal constraints on free associations: Should refrain from breaking the laws that protect the rights and interests of those outside the association. All the participants should be adults of sound mind: if they"re going after vulnerable people then they fail the test. This principle means to target children most importantly because some groups target and indoctrinate children. Brain barry is more of a statist when it comes to children than a liberal. Their participation should be voluntary should be free to cease membership whenever they want to. If associations seem to exercise governmental powers we are looking more at a coercive group rather than a voluntary association; voluntary associations vs. associations that have coercive powers. Many illiberal groups within liberal societies do not constitute of cial sub-state polities but are capable of coercing their members, violating their citizenship rights. Some groups tax people and even beat members when they don"t do what is expected of them.
