The house of commons is the central link between the public and the government in canadian democracy, and, is the furnace of national politics. Interests in society are represented there in one way or another, and they clash on a regular basis. House debate is a lead-up" to the subsequent election campaign. In popular parlance, the word parliament is often used synonymously with the commons, which is by far its most important part. Members of the house of commons are called members of parliament or mps. They can be largely divided into three main groups: Those who also serve as cabinet ministers (the government) Those who support the cabinet (government backbenchers) Those who oppose the government (the opposition) The principle function of the house of commons is the legislative function however, to pass laws, these are usually formulated in the executive branch.
