WEEK 3: ENERGY USAGE
News and Current Events
• Oil (tar) sands full of 340billion gallons of toxic sludge spur fears of environmental
catastrophe
• Needs a large amount of processing
• Metabolic relationship with Earth
• Trump and oil could hit $80/barrel. Going up and down with remarkable speed.
Natural gas:
• Supply, demand and constraints (i.e. commerce = moving gas to the market)
• Produce more than they can ship out
• Price matters because it determines if wells are shut or open
• Prospect of shale wave (shale oil)
• Country wide carbon price - mix and match with cap and trade?
• Huge oil spill left after burning tanker sinks in China
• China’s ban on imported plastic (taking in garbage)
• Affects UK waste recycling, producing a lot on their own
• China buying new plastic from petroleum companies
• Micro-plastic: present in almost every water and food source around the world
