GGR333H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Pyrolysis, Coal Pollution Mitigation, Anthracite
WEEK 5: COAL
Coal and Society
Coal: a fossil fuel formed from dead plant matter (peat)
- lignite, soft coal, hard coal (Anthracite), coke (manufactured coal)
- concentration of carbon rises and energy dense as you go deeper into the
ground
How does it form? A chemical reaction from fire
From wood to coal: first used as substitute for wood for industry and household use
- supply and demand for wood and charcoal
- mined in 2 ways: 1. surface/open mining 2. underground mining “long wall”
• What is the future? People are looking to grow it
• What is the current situation?
• What is the historical situation?
• Demand: Users and Uses
• household (but not good because of toxins)
• Brick manufacturing: allowed chimney and chambers built but then collapsed
• Production of coke from coal using pyrolysis (major input for steel)
•
Today primarily used for electricity generation and iron and steel production*
• Supply - Where, Types, How
- Sectors of the Coal Industry
1. Production (mining and refining)

Document Summary
Coal: a fossil fuel formed from dead plant matter (peat) Lignite, soft coal, hard coal (anthracite), coke (manufactured coal) Concentration of carbon rises and energy dense as you go deeper into the ground. From wood to coal: first used as substitute for wood for industry and household use. Supply and demand for wood and charcoal. People are looking to grow it: what is the current situation, what is the historical situation, demand: users and uses household (but not good because of toxins) Brick manufacturing: allowed chimney and chambers built but then collapsed. Production of coke from coal using pyrolysis (major input for steel) Today primarily used for electricity generation and iron and steel production* Sectors of the coal industry: production (mining and refining) Figure 5. 16 shows where coal can be found. Early industrial coal production involved wagons running on rails: commerce (moving it)
