External exam: recovery of trace evidence, evidence of injury. Toxicology: collecting sample for analysis, interpreting toxicology reports. Wound pattern depends on local area struck and properties of projectiles: penetrating or perforating wounds, where to expect to nd projectiles. Indicators of suicide: gun held against skin, wound in mouth or temple of dominant hand. Indicators of homicide: gun red from more than few inches away, an angle or location that rules out self-in iction, shot through clothing, no weapon present. Deaths greatly result of signi cant damage to brain or damage to heart/aorta followed. Body relatively intact, presence of soft tissue. Identi cation often straightforward: visual identi cation, fingerprints. Not always the case with : badly burned bodies, severe decomposition, pieces/dismemberment. Contributions of forensic anthropologist: outdoor crime scene identi cation and analysis, recovery of human remains and associated evidence, detailed analysis of skeletal remains. Assist with cause and manner of death: only with forensic pathologist.
