ENV201H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Adaptive Management, Venn Diagram, Infrastructure Canada
Document Summary
An approach that treats policy/ management as experiments to test hypothesis, monitor outcomes and adapts policy/actions using knowledge gained. Actions over inaction: don"t be paralyzed by the unknown. Uncertainly is an opportunity to learn: take actions, and learn from action, there needs to be decision making authority (action needs to be taken/ approved) Seeks resilience: system/ community can absorb negative hits, and can rebuild/ manage, example. Integrative: information from other sources and people, to learn more about the system. Traditional or typical process: problem-> identify possible action-> determine plan-> implement (linear chart) Adaptive process: problem assessment->monitor and assess-> re-design experiment-> implement- Problem assessment->identify possible actions-> determine plan-> implement-> monitor. Passive: monitoring and learning; evaluating and improving: expectation that policy/ management needs to be adapted. Active: examines several policies and practices and learns from outcomes: testing many approaches at once and figuring out which one works better.
