Document Summary
Environmental hazards can be physical, biological, chemical, or cultural. Chemical hazards: chemical hazards: synthetic (artificial) chemicals such as pesticides, disinfectants, pharmaceuticals, harmful natural chemicals also exist, example: yeus- type of conifer which are very toxic but actually provide chemotherapy drugs for us. Biological hazards: biological hazards: interactions with organisms, we can get viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens. Infectious disease other species parasitize (cause damage to) humans, in order to fulfill their ecological roles: vectors = agents that transfer pathogens to hosts. Cultural hazards: arising from home, socioeconomic status, occupation, and behavioural choices. The book silent spring began the public debate over synthetic chemicals : rachel carson presented the risks of ddt (synthetic chemical) and other persistent chemicals in the environment. In the 1960s; pesticides which included these synthetic chemicals, were mostly untested; sprayed over public areas: ddt kills animals such as fish, birds and mammals such as bats etc.
