Phrase: a cluster of words that go together for some reason or another, but lack a subject or verb. Clause: will always contain both a subject and a verb. Clauses: main clause, contains the main subject and main verb of the sentence, with a long, complex sentence. Independent clause: grammatically can stand on its own, can be joined to another clause, dependent clause, cannot stand on its own, depends on the main clause to complete its sense. Types of sentences: simple, compound, complex, compound complex. Simple sentence: having 1 main/independent clause, *do not necessarily have to be short! e. g. : birds fly. => the e-mails and phone messages addressed to my former self come from a distant race of people with exotic concerns and far too much time on their hands.
