Document Summary
Topic: identity formation and enactment in video games (gaming and identity) This week we will examine the role of video games in how we create our identities online and off. Mmporg = massively multiplayer online role playing games. How people enact and perform in different types of media. How people can be categorized and fit into different kind of boxes: categorization of a person constitutes who they are. Identity formation in video games in enacted and performed in many of the same ways as it is in the real world, and is constrained through the categorization of people and roles they can assume (hacking, 1986). Goffman (as cited in waskul, 2006) asserts that games are anything that involve or rely on world-building activities) (p. 19) This extends to a lot of thingstooth fairy, tag, etc. Identity formation in the real world happens in a lot of places you wouldn"t realize.
