Document Summary

There are di erent de nitions for acids and bases dependent on the circumstances. Operational de nition - (properties in which they di er) react with carbonates to produce carbon dioxide gas. 1. don"t react with carbonates to produce carbon dioxide gas. Arrhenius"s concept - acids are substances that produce hydrogen ions, when dissolved in water. Hcl(g) + h20 -------> h3o 1+(aq) + cl1-(aq) Bases are substances that produce hydroxide ions when dissolved in water. Naoh(s) + h20 ------> na1+(aq)+ oh1-(aq: according to arrhenius, only h1+-, and oh1- -containing compounds can be acids or bases. Here ammonia (which does not contain an oh1- ) reacts with water to produce the characteristic hydroxide: according to arrhenius, in the following neutralization reaction: Hcl(aq) + naoh(aq) nacl(aq) + h2o(l) net ionic equation: h+(aq) + oh-(aq) h2o(l) water is inevitably formed since acids produce h+ and bases produce oh- But h+ ions don"t exist on their own.
