The way in which people understand themselves to be related to other people. Baloma; the spirits of the dead in the trobriand islands (malinowski) Baloma: spirits that enter a woman"s body and cause her to become pregnant, usually when she"s bathing in the ocean. The natives don"t know sex causes pregnancy. Theres a relationship between the way we think about conception and kinship (different, but interrelated) They have only 1 term for kinship: veiola (connections in the maternal line - only mother) Notion of kinship doesn"t include the father"s connections/relations. The relationship between brothers is the closest because the same woman gave birth to them. Their idea about being constituted of the same body, is similar to our ideas of consanguinity (blood relatives) Theres no actual relation between parents" blood and children"s ; it is a metaphor (there is no blood involved in conception)
