Document Summary
Types of great apes: chimpanzee, gorillas, hominid, humans. Chimps are more closely related to humans than gorillas. Chimps and bonobos are our closest relatives. Chimps settle disputes through physical violence but bonobos do not. No other ape has language but many scientists have tried to show that chimps, bonobos, and gorillas are capable of learning human languages. Ape genius is a movie that covers a lot of topics discussed in the course. Method: take chimpanzee, put him in human family, and see if it will acquire the language along with some explicit learning. In order to produce any human spoken language, we have to have the right setup: the throat, the mouth (physicality) Since spoken language didn"t work, scientists tried to use american sign language (asl) Chimps and other apes could, with signi cant training, produce combinations of signs. Humans can put words into in nite number of sentences with a nite set of resources (productivity)
