Document Summary
Winker involves an intention on the part of the winker to communicate something. Though blinking (or twitching) may also communicate it does so in the absence of any intention to communicate on the part of the blinker. A lot of animal communication is non-intentional. Sweating communicates that someone is hot/nervous, but it"s non-intentional. Athletes communicate with each other using movements (voluntary non-intentional actions) Non-referential communication may or may not be intentional. Semanticity: human language is an obvious thing, but it is composed of units that carry meaning (words) Reference requires joint attention (joint attentional model/shared intentionality model) Reference criteria: a knows that b knows that a is attending to the salt. No pointing necessary when you use words. Would still work if the salt is not present ( where is the salt? ) Communication doesn"t need to be about something. It"s still communication, but there"s no reference (an intentional wink communicates a message, but it does not refer to anything)
