Sapir-whorf: worked with native americans, formed basis of linguistic anthropology. Sapir: language is complex inventory of all ideas, interests, and concepts of a people. Whorf: influence of language is visible in vocabulary and grammar. Multidirectional, constantly interacting and changing each other. 3 basic types: orientation ( feeling down ), ontological ( mind is full of ideas ), associations of entities ( time is money ) idealized cognitive models: targets associated with multiple other domains example: sport talk (fortune, war, chess, money) Metonymy: part represents whole, irony: meaning contrary to definition. What does this all tell us? infers how speakers experience the world number of differences = cultural importance cultural interest can change through time example: new terms to talk about technology example: english vs paiute words for geographical features.
