Changing research methods in cultural anthropology: from the armchair to the field. Started off when early anthropologists did their research from home by reading reports about other cultures written by travelers, missionaries and explorers. Had no direct experience with the culture they were studying. Took a step further in late 19th early 20th century by traveling to africa, asia and living near but not with the people they were studying, called, verandah anthropology . During mid-twentieth century lewis henry morgan took a step further learning about the ppl ad their culture through direct observation and interactions with more than 1 person. Studied the iroquois ppl, and he showed that their behaviour and beliefs make sense if an outsider spends time with them: participant observation. Learning about a culture that involves living in a culture for extended periods of time gathering data. Father of it is bronislaw malinowski who lived in the trobriand islands in the south pacific during wwi.
