Pragmatics is the study of meaning within context. Looks at linguistic utterances in a larger context. People in the south have a kind of social solidarity with one another through their language/sayings. Developed much of the language (slang) through jazz and jazz musicians/culture. No regional meaning, but this phrase might give off a social characteristic of being uneducated or lower class. Also routed in a hippie type language. Common talk, what the average person says. Trump often uses common talk as a way to connect with the general public. The movie was 140 minutes long (referential context) We sat through a movie that was almost two and a half hours long (emotional) The connotation is that it was too much and they couldn"t enjoy the movie. In the news, speech is usually only 5% referential, the rest has heavy emotional context in order to get the viewers to feel a certain way about the news that they are watching.
