Diminutive (addition of grammar in order to address a specific person) Augmentative (add on to; make something bigger): Diminutive- extensions (make something smaller): abnormally small. Notice some kind of pattern in which way these are used (diminutive and augmentative. Depends much on the relationship between the speakwer and person being addressed. Doesn"t necessary mean smallness in all aspects, but meaning. Describe what is called a register : specific way of talking within a specific language. It is not something people make up, pretty much all english language speakers used; it is shared and is a learnt behaviour. Baby talk in english is a relatively stable, conventionalized part of a language. Baby talk is not universal; not all people partake in baby-talk. It is part of culture; transmitted by language.
