COMMUNICATION
How we as humans communicate is something unique (Noam Chomsky)
“We have an inmate capacity for language”
- This means a natural process that we are hardwired (born) for a capacity for language.
- We are not hardwired to learn a specific language but hardwired to learn any language.
- Learn through socialization (immersion through social and cultural context)
ICTs involve and filter our communication, and have an impact on our attention.
- ICTs in between 2 people are mediating (mediate our communication - middleman).
- We want to understand the impact of the growing use of ICTs in relations to not only on
how we communicate but actually what we communicate (while comparing different
mediums, i.e. letters vs email, 140 characters limits for twitter).
- Our reliance on ICTs has grown dramatically
TRADITIONAL MEDIA
1605 Newspaper
The earliest and first form of traditional media that was used to provide people with news and
information that was timely, accurate and complete.
Shaped our habits, in both the construction & representation of our social reality.
Our consumption of newspapers shaped our way of receiving information.
The issue of representation, the conjunction of representation, the media reports on what
happens and represents to the public.
- The institutions of media presents us with a particular view of the world and not
necessarily the reality (objective view).
