Mental illness is a label applied to those whose behaviour is abnormal and problematic, but not criminal. Can be considered criminal depending on what happens. Dif cult to deal with because they are sometimes not rational. Label is used to control those who are troublesome but not criminal. Label is most likely to be applied to those who do not have the power to avoid the label. With a problematic population it is easy to label someone as mentally ill (homeless, suicidal, etc) Schizophrenia involved having hallucinations, bizarre thought patterns (1%) Anxiety disorders: obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, panic disorder, ptsd (12%) At least one percent of a population is likely to have a serious and persistent mental illness at any given time (300 000 canadians) 1 in 5 canadians are likely to be diagnosed with a mental illness at some point in their life. There is no hope for the mentally ill.
