Freud, founder of psychoanalysis: gender identity is developed in stages through experiences infancy, as propelled by body. Ego: set limits for the id (controls the id) Before birth: boys: womb (luxurious) girls: womb (luxurious) Oral (0-18m) boys: mothers breast (food) girls: mother"s breast (food) Anal(18m-3yrs) boys: urination and defecation girls: urination and defecation. Genital boys: oedipus crisis (castration anxiety) girls: electra complex (penis envy) A shift from biology to social explanation by dislocating gender and sexuality from biology. Androcentric theory: sees gender identity as an achievement ( traumatic for boys/ smooth for girls) Sex role theory analyzes individuals socialization into appropriate gender roles and identities. M-f test: empirical measure to determine how "masculine" or "feminine" an individual is. Knowledge : colour combinations, source of goal, cooking. Feelings: emotions in a continuum- a lot, little, some or none to test for pity, afraid and anger wickless etc. Occupation: career stereotyping, character trait appearance, and children"s books that people like.
