Descriptive theory: describes a situation/ what is happening. Explicative theory: hypothesis as to why: gather knowledge of factors. Predictive theory: cause has been determined, and now you can predict. Definitions: what are the key terms: measurable + consistent terms. Descriptions: what are the characteristics: reality of what is happening. Relational statements: how are variables related: deterministic = more hard science, probabilistic = most popular for social sciences. Provides ways to look at the world. Develop hypothesis test with empirical data revise if necessary. Starts with a case or data collection. Research method determines whether it is inductive or deductive. 3 broad positions on knowing the world: positivism, interpretivism, critical approaches. Uses the principal of empiricism- use of the senses for knowledge.
