Document Summary

Chapter 11 | lecture 8| american psychology and functionalism. Stage one: moral and mental philosophy (1640 - 1776) Psychology was combined with religious doctrines, especially in universities. John locke"s in uence spread and provided a base for logic and a psychology that could be used to support one"s religious beliefs. Psychology became a separate discipline in the united states, largely under the in uence of scottish common sense philosophy. Topics began to include perception, memory, imagination, association, language, and thinking. Stage three: the u. s. renaissance (1886 - 1896) Many journals were published, marking the beginning of psychology with emphasis on individual differences, adaptation to the environment, and practicality. Titchener began his structuralist program at cornell university. Science, concern for practicality, emphasis on the individual, and evolutionary theory combined into the school of functionalism (john dewey"s publications marked the beginning) Structuralism and functionalism overlapped and there was little constructive dialogue between them.
