Late 1950s: adhd was called hyperkinesis and attributed to poor filtering of stimuli entering the brain, called hyperactive child syndrome. 1970s: deficits in attention and impulse control, in addition to hyperactivity, were seen as the primary symptoms. 1980s: increased interest due to rise in stimulant use. Recently: focus has been on problems in self-regulation, behavioural inhibition, and neuropsychological deficits.
