Socialization Across the Life Cycle
Process of Socialization
Socialization is the process of passing on a culture’s ways of thinking and acting
While this usually occurs during childhood, the process continues through adulthood
oStarts with parents as early as in utero; learn to recognize voices and tones (nonverbal pers)
Learning can occur through explicit instruction, through the assumptions by which parents and others
treat children and adults, and through observation of other ppl’s behaviour
Indiviudal Influences – develop sense of their identity, status, and roles in society
Acquire the basic knowledge needed to survive physically and the skill needed to take part in social life
Socialization of children occurs first in families and includes other close family members
Most theories of the family look at how values and norms of a culture are passed on to new members of
the society

How we socialize children reflect what we expect of their future and it reflects the values place on them
