Developmental researchers realized children displayed various patterns of attachment to their major caregivers (bowlby, 1969) Relationships with attachment figures during childhood affect one"s self image and the perception he/she has of the world around him/her. 3 factors that made attachment relationships: proximity (close to caregiver is better chance to survive), secure base (to feel comfortable to explore), safe haven (if in danger, i will have someone to protect me) How we are treated in times of distress will change how we view ourselves and others. Our experiences shape us into a template of how we experience the world. Secure: mom returns, gives them a kiss and continues to play - i will be ok, i trust her to come back. Anxious: get angry with the mother, give them the silent treatment. Usually because there was an inconsistency with needs being met. Avoidant: don"t acknowledge moms return, but keep playing. Usually because the parent is unreliable and not around.
