Places children in a community that influences their opportunities (ex. The way the system operates and adapts to change affects the relationships within it. Stressors other than death, illness, divorce, and relocation include the following: Jerome kagan"s definition: parenting means implementing a series of decisions about the socialization of one"s children. Enables children to become responsible, contributing members of society. There is little consensus as to what children should be like when they grow up/ what parents should do to get them there. Historical trends: parent-centered --> child-centered --> balanced approach. Gender: play activities differ for boys and girls; different qualities are stressed. Special needs: added stress; all family members are affected; parenting may be too overprotective, or even rejecting or abusive. Preschool years: reasoning instruction, isolation, withdrawal of privileges, reinforcement, rewards. Acceptance/ responsiveness - give affection, provide encouragement, sensitive. Authoritative: parents are willing to offer reasons for their directives (democratic)
