Mutual regulations between infants & caregivers: crying: -darwin though crying let mother gauge babies condition, Learning theorists show that crying is voluntary control of baby, 2 conditions for communiation 1) different types of cries communicate different messages: variation in cries communicate different messages. Emotions=an internal reaction or feeling that is either positive or negative, and may reflect readiness for an action. Affect=outward expression of emotions through facial expressions, gestures, information etc: babies indicate distress through crying, and staring intently. Sadness and anger show in expression at 3-4 months, fear @ 7 months. Guilt/shame etc. don"t appear until 2nd year of life. Understand meanings of facial expressions at 6 months old: socialization of emotions: inuit babies often held in pouch next to mother, babies held more don"t cry. Display rules=expectations and attitudes a society holds towards expression of affect. Children first tell feelings then learn to control them.
