Document Summary

Constructivist approach: we understand properties of objects. Piaget"s theory is based on a very general point of view. Didn"t see them as passive recipients; need to actively interact to based on their function, physical interactions with the object. Important to go through all the stages to properly develop. Four stages: sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational, formal operational. Assimilation: fitting new ideas into an existing scheme. Accommodation: changing existing schemes to fit in new ideas. Lecture 5 slide 12: a major development is object permenance. Even the development of object permanence involves a few stages. Preoperational stage: 2 to 6 years. Reflex: a behaviour in response to stimulus. Moro: clinging on to mom; response for survival to grasp on to whatever is close to them to prevent falling or in response to loud sound, etc. Tonic neck: raise one arm in the air in response to forcing their neck towards one side; arms become stiff and tense.
