The study of how we develop and change throughout the lifespan: physical, cognitive, social. Continuity and stages - whether or not our development is continuous or intermittent. Stability and change - how stable are certain characteristics e. g iq at different ages. Prenatal development - the stage of development between conception and birth. Conception - the union of the sperm and the ovum (fertilization), release of an ovum (egg), depositing of sperm in the vagina, meet in fallopian tube, implants in the uterus. Zygote - first 2 weeks after conception, cell differentiation (cells will divide), attaches to uterine wall, detaches into 2 parts: embryo & placenta. Further development of organ systems, by 5 months you have almost all your neutrons, response to sound by 6 months (preference for mother"s voice after birth indicates learning). 23-24 weeks is the age of viability (shot of survival if born given modern technology) but breathing, digestion, susceptibility to infection, body warmth can be compromised.
