Chapter 16 therapies: the psychological therapies, introduction. There are 2 major types of therapies: psychological and biomedical. They both have the same goal of helping people with psychological disorders. Their major assumption is that psychological disorders are the result of psychological factors. This is based on the needs of the client mix and match therapies. Right now this is just an idea it hasn"t happened yet. Create a single therapeutic system that has all the techniques scientifically documented and effective. This limits quack or treatments that don"t work. There are currently four most influential therapies (see below: psychoanalysis. If there is a dysfunction (depressed, anxious), it is a result of unresolved childhood conflicts. Something happened to them growing up and the conflict was pushed into the unconscious and it now still affects their emotions and etc. Access the unconscious and bring conflicts into the conscious. Help patients achieve insight in their problems. Healthy functions will prevail once problems are gone.
