Document Summary
Nerve cells, the basic building blocks of the nervous system. Dendrites: branching extensions, receive messages and conduct impulses towards cell body. Axons carry messages between neurons via electrical impulses, or to muscles or glands. Myelin sheat: faty issue layer, insulates axon and speeds up transmission. Synapse: juncion between axon ip of sending neuron and dendrite or cell body of receiving neuron. The gap between them is called the synapic clet. Neurotransmiters: chemical messengers cross synapic gaps between neurons. Reuptake: a nt"s reabsorpion by the sending neuron. Antagonists: bind to receptors but block nt funcions (botulin blocks ach release) The nervous system consists of all the nerve cells of peripheral and cns. Pns- sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body. Nerves- bundled axons that form neural cables connecing the cns with muscles glands and sense organs.
