Consciousness as a state: sleep wake states, conscious waking state, unconscious sleeping state, what is sleep, sleep is not unique. Recording sleep in humans: eeeg, emg, eog, other. How does an experimenter know if the subject is asleep: behavior ex signalled awareness physiology. Biological rhythums: circadian every 24h (sleep wake, ultradian: within 24h (eating cycle, menstrual cycle (monthly cycle) Suprachiasmatic nucleus and pinal gland: we normally sleep on a 24 hour schedule, regulated by light and dark. It is the suprachiasmatic nucleus (scn) that detects light and dark: the scn is agroup of nuclei in the inferior region of the hypothalamus located immediately superior to the optic chain. Waking state: eeg fast frequency low amplitude, subject is conscious, and aware of their environment, most young adults spend about 16 hours awake. Stage of n1: brief period during the transition from a waking to sleep state, eeg slow, loss of muscle touts.
