Document Summary

Nation a human community united by a special sense of solidarity deriving from shared features which seeks, in the name of this solidarity, a distinct political status (generally autonomy or independence). Used to describe modern, industrialized democracies: ex: quebec, scotland, catalonia, etc. Solidarity = a sense of sharing: language, religion, ancestry, common history, symbols, political institutions, etc. Solidarity does not come from face-to-face relations: ex: canadians have solidarity with one another despite not knowing most canadians. Is a political concept = better governed by its own members: don"t want an american running canada. A state may harbour more than one nation: ex: spain = catalonia and the basque country may be considered nations distinct from the spanish one. A nation may also be divided amongst several different states: ex: kurds = turkey, syria, iran, and iraq. The state (legal concept) sometimes corresponds to the nation (sociological concept): ex: norway, portugal, korea, japan = are ethnically and linguistically homogenous.
