Every year hundreds of canadians and thousands of people world wide die because they cannot get the organs they need for transplants. The tragedy is magnified by the fact that so many of these deaths are preventable. Every year too many people die (approximately 260 canadians) while waiting for an organ donation. One donor can save up to 8 lives, and tissue donors can benefit more than 75 people. Over 1,600 canadians are added to organ wait lists yearly. Increased organ donation rates would not only save lives but would save money. A 90% majority of canadians support organ donation but less than 20% have made plans to donate. Canada"s donation [20. 9 per million] rate is below many other countries including spain (43. 4), the. United states (31) and the united kingdom (21. 4). The average patient on the waiting list for a kidney will wait for four years for their new organ.
