PHI 2396 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Therapeutic Abortion, Miscarriage, Fetus
Document Summary
Pregnancies can end naturally or even by human intervention. Natural process is known as a spontaneous abortions or a miscarriage. Intentionally ending a pregnancy is called induced abortion. If an abortion is induced to preserve the life and health of a pregnant mother is referred to as a therapeutic abortion. Statistics show that over half of the women that get abortions are usually under the age of 25 and one fifth of these are teenagers. It can be time where having a baby would interfere with their life, cause social and financial difficulties, can be detrimental to the health of the mother. Abortion has always been a sensitive topic and has an ongoing debate. After the supreme courts ruling in 1973 it has been set that when getting abortions during the first trimester, the state cannot interfere. In the second trimester the state is allowed to limit but not prohibit abortion.
