First wave feminism (mid 1800s-1920): equal capacities, equal rights: a response to gender stereotypes, liberal feminism- women can reason as well as men. Any existing difference is due to difference in access to education, not in nature: therefore, women deserve the same education and legal rights. Third wave (late 1990s-now): difference among women: differences in class, income, culture, race, religion & gender oppression. Kohlberg"s stages of moral development: level a- premoral (pre-rational) Stage 1- obedience in order to avoid punishment. 2- exchange of favours for egocentric self-interest: level b- conventional (morality of conventional role conformity) 4- authority-maintaining morality (following social order: level c- post-conventional (rational, impartial, freely chosen) 5- morality of mutual respect, cooperation for mutual self- interest. 6- morality of universal principles, go beyond mutual self- interest. No privileged place in the theory for special relationships. Atomic individual that can be detached from the web of relationships in which one"s identity and moral aims are formed.
