PHI 1102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Anthropocentrism, Environmental Ethics
Document Summary
Focuses on anthropocentrism which is seen as the only interests that matter or are real are human interests. Baxter also talks about preferences so we can probably name him as a preference utilitarian. This fourth criteria is focusing on a capitalist framework. Just like his four criterions his perspective is anthropocentric: anthropocentric approach to environmental ethics. Just like his general four criteria, his environmental ethic is anthropocentric, i. e. people-oriented : Baxter"s first reason to the anthropocentric approach is first, no other position corresponds to the way most people really think and act-i. e. corresponds to reality (p. 54) The limitation to this reason is that there"s a conceptual limit. Baxter"s third reason to the anthropocentric approach is third what is good for humans is, in many respects, good for penguins and pine trees-clean air for example. So that humans are in these respects, surrogates for plant and animal life.
