Disaster: occurs suddenly, disrupts the community, depletes resources. Caused by nature, human error, biological hazards, infectious diseases. Epidemic: infectious disease spreads rapidly and affects a large number of pop, community or region. Pandemic: affects higher number of pop than normal around the globe. Stages of emergency management: prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery. Public health agency of canada: 2004; establish legislation, works with government in emergency situation. Works with provincial and territorial governments to coordinate a unified response to any national public health emergency. Public health: advocacy and leadership throughout all phases. Must learn from past disasters that include infection prevention and control in mass casualty incidents, public education, internal and external communication and building partnerships with outside agencies. Community health organizations: collaborating and responding in a coordinated manner. Individual agencies will designate the most appropriate individuals to the incident management system (ims). Chns: ph surge interventions, medical triage, ph triage, safety of vulnerable pops.
